MMP stands for Mixed-member proportional representation, a political abbreviation.
Electoral system in which voters cast one vote for a local district representative and another for a party, with list seats added so that each party's total share of seats matches its share of the party vote. Germany and New Zealand are its best-known users.
Example: New Zealand switched from first-past-the-post to MMP after a 1993 referendum.
Usage notes
New Zealand held its first MMP election in 1996. Germany reformed its version in 2023 to fix the size of the Bundestag at 630 seats. The Scottish Parliament uses a similar "additional member system", which is less fully proportional.
