Mbps stands for Megabits per second, a data unit abbreviation.
One million bits per second, the standard unit for home broadband, mobile data and Wi-Fi speeds. Providers advertise plans such as 300 Mbps or 1,000 Mbps, and the FCC defines broadband as at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload.
Example: Your speed test shows 245 Mbps download and 22 Mbps upload.
Usage notes
Divide by 8 to get megabytes per second: a 100 Mbps line downloads at most 12.5 MB/s. The FCC raised its broadband benchmark from 25/3 to 100/20 Mbps in March 2024. Advertised speeds are "up to" figures, and Wi-Fi interference or congestion reduces real throughput. Also written Mb/s or Mbit/s.
