MASH stands for Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
The inflammatory, fibrosis-prone subset of MASLD, previously called NASH, diagnosed by biopsy showing steatosis with ballooning and inflammation. Noninvasive tools such as FIB-4, elastography and the ELF blood test estimate fibrosis stage, the strongest predictor of outcome.
Example: Biopsy-proven MASH with F2 fibrosis; start resmetirom and repeat elastography in 12 months.
Usage notes
The 2023 nomenclature consensus kept the histologic definition unchanged, so MASH and NASH describe the same disease and older trial data still apply. Pronounced "mash". Drug trials use endpoints such as resolution of steatohepatitis without worsening fibrosis. Cardiovascular disease, not liver failure, remains the leading cause of death in these patients.
