CategoriesEducation & Academia

LLD stands for Legum Doctor (Doctor of Laws), a degree abbreviation.

Doctorate that American universities award almost exclusively as an honorary degree, often to commencement speakers, judges and public figures. In the UK it can be a higher doctorate earned for a substantial body of published legal scholarship, and in Canada and South Africa an earned research doctorate.

Example: The university conferred an LLD, honoris causa, on the retiring chief justice at commencement.

Usage notes

Written LL.D., with the doubled L marking the Latin plural "legum". Recipients of honorary degrees generally do not use the title "Dr." professionally, and AP style advises against it for honorary doctorates. Biographies usually note the degree as honorary to avoid implying earned study.
