LHS stands for Left-hand side, a math abbreviation.
The expression to the left of an equals sign or inequality. Identity proofs usually start from the LHS and transform it step by step into the right-hand side.
Example: LHS = sin²x + cos²x = 1 = RHS, as required.
Usage notes
Trigonometric identity proofs in schools are often laid out as "LHS = ... = RHS". In programming, the left-hand side of an assignment is the variable or location receiving the value. Working on both sides at once can hide errors, which is why teachers prefer transforming one side only.
