LCC stands for Low-cost carrier, an aviation abbreviation.
Airline business model built on low base fares, high aircraft utilization, a single aircraft type, point-to-point routes and fees for extras such as checked bags and seat selection. Southwest Airlines, Ryanair and easyJet are among the best-known examples.
Example: Ryanair, Europe's largest LCC, charges for everything from priority boarding to printed boarding passes at the airport.
Usage notes
Southwest, which began flying within Texas in 1971, is usually cited as the model's pioneer. The term "budget airline" means the same thing. Many LCCs fly to cheaper secondary airports, such as Ryanair at Beauvais for Paris. Since the 2010s, traditional airlines have copied LCC features with basic economy fares.
