KIX stands for Kansai International Airport, an airport code abbreviation.
Main international airport for Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe, built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay and opened in 1994. Its long, curving terminal was designed by Renzo Piano.
Example: The Haruka express from KIX to Kyoto takes about 75 minutes.
Usage notes
ICAO code RJBB. The island has sunk several meters since construction because of soft seabed clay, a problem engineers continue to manage. In 2018 Typhoon Jebi flooded a runway and a tanker struck the bridge to the mainland, stranding thousands. Osaka's older Itami airport (ITM) handles domestic flights.
