Jul stands for July, a month abbreviation.
The seventh month, with 31 days, renamed in 44 BC from Quintilis ("fifth month") to honor Julius Caesar, who was born in that month. It includes Canada Day on July 1 and US Independence Day on July 4.
Example: Office closed Jul 3 and Jul 4 for the Independence Day holiday.
Usage notes
AP style never abbreviates July, so Jul is used in compact tables, spreadsheets and timestamps. The renaming came shortly after Caesar's assassination and was promoted by Mark Antony. The old name Quintilis is one of the clearest signs that the Roman year once began in March.
