Aug stands for August, a month abbreviation.
Renamed in 8 BC from Sextilis ("sixth month") in honor of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, who reportedly chose it because several of his greatest successes happened in that month. It has 31 days.
Example: Back-to-school sales start Aug. 1 and run through Aug. 15.
Usage notes
With a specific date, AP writes Aug. A popular story says Augustus took a day from February so his month would equal July's 31 days, but the tale traces to the 13th-century scholar Johannes de Sacrobosco and is rejected by historians, since Sextilis already had 31 days. August's birthstone is peridot.
