CategoriesLaw & Legal

JNOV stands for Judgment non obstante veredicto (judgment notwithstanding the verdict), a Latin legal abbreviation.

Judgment entered by a trial judge for one party despite a jury verdict for the other, because no reasonable jury could have reached that verdict on the evidence. It is requested after the verdict, often together with a motion for a new trial.

Example: After the $12 million award, the defense moved for JNOV, arguing there was no evidence of causation.

Usage notes

In federal court the term was replaced in 1991 by a "renewed motion for judgment as a matter of law" under Rule 50(b), but JNOV remains standard in many state courts and in everyday usage. The motion generally must be preceded by a motion for directed verdict before the case goes to the jury. Also written j.n.o.v.
