JAG stands for Judge Advocate General, a military term abbreviation.
Senior legal officer of a military service, and by extension the corps of military lawyers, called judge advocates, who prosecute and defend courts-martial, advise commanders on operational law and provide legal assistance to service members.
Example: The JAG office reviewed the rules of engagement before the operation.
Usage notes
Each service has its own Judge Advocate General, a general or flag officer; individual lawyers are judge advocates, though they are often called "JAGs." The TV drama JAG (1995 to 2005) popularized the term and spun off NCIS. Military lawyers must be licensed attorneys before commissioning.
