IUL stands for Indexed universal life, an insurance abbreviation.
Universal life policy whose cash value earns interest linked to a stock index such as the S&P 500, subject to a cap and usually a 0% floor, without investing directly in the market.
Example: The IUL illustration showed 7% returns, but the cap and fees make that unlikely.
Usage notes
Regulators adopted Actuarial Guideline 49 in 2015 and later revisions to limit the rates IUL illustrations may assume. Critics argue IULs are complex and often oversold as retirement vehicles; supporters cite tax-free policy loans and downside protection.
