ITAR stands for International Traffic in Arms Regulations, a US law abbreviation.
State Department regulations that control the export of defense articles and services on the US Munitions List, including weapons, military electronics and related technical data. Sharing controlled data with foreign persons, even inside the United States, can count as an export.
Example: Only US persons may access the drawings because the component is ITAR-controlled.
Usage notes
The regulations implement the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 and are administered by the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. Dual-use items with civilian and military uses are generally covered instead by the Commerce Department's Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Violations can bring heavy fines and debarment from defense contracting.
