IPFS stands for InterPlanetary File System, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.

A peer-to-peer protocol for storing and sharing files addressed by their content hash rather than their location, so any node holding a file can serve it. NFT projects and decentralized websites commonly store data on IPFS.

Example: The NFT metadata points to an IPFS hash, so the image can't be silently swapped.

Usage notes

Created by Juan Benet and released by Protocol Labs in 2015. Files stay available only while at least one node "pins" them, so paid pinning services or Filecoin, a related incentive network, keep data online. Public gateways let ordinary browsers fetch the content.
