IP PIN stands for Identity Protection Personal Identification Number, a tax abbreviation.
Six-digit number assigned by the IRS that must appear on a taxpayer's federal return to prove identity, preventing anyone else from e-filing a fraudulent return with the same Social Security number. A new number is issued every year.
Example: After my data was stolen, I signed up for an IP PIN so no one else can file in my name.
Usage notes
Originally given only to confirmed identity-theft victims, the program opened to any taxpayer who can verify their identity in 2021. Each dependent may have an IP PIN of their own. The IRS never asks for it by phone, email or text message.
