in-lb stands for Inch-pound, an engineering unit abbreviation.

A small US torque unit, one pound of force at one inch, one twelfth of a lb-ft or about 0.113 N·m. Bicycle parts, scope mounts, electrical terminals and small fasteners are torqued in in-lb.

Example: Torque the scope ring screws to 18 in-lb in a crisscross pattern.

Usage notes

Confusing in-lb with ft-lb can over-tighten a fastener twelvefold, stripping threads or cracking parts, a common mistake with click-type torque wrenches. Electrical codes require breaker and lug connections to be tightened to the manufacturer's in-lb values. Also written lbf·in.
