IIV stands for Inactivated influenza vaccine, an infectious disease abbreviation.
Injected flu vaccine containing killed or split virus components, recommended every year for everyone six months and older. High-dose and adjuvanted versions are preferred for adults 65 and older because they produce stronger immune responses.
Example: Annual IIV given left deltoid; next due fall 2026.
Usage notes
Formulations were labeled IIV3 or IIV4 for trivalent or quadrivalent; US vaccines returned to trivalent for the 2024–25 season after the B/Yamagata lineage disappeared. Inactivated vaccines cannot cause influenza. Recombinant (RIV) and live nasal (LAIV) vaccines are the alternatives. Egg allergy is no longer a reason to avoid any flu vaccine.
