1. Intrusion detection system

Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations

A system that monitors network traffic or host activity for signs of attacks or policy violations and raises alerts, without blocking traffic itself. Network-based (NIDS) and host-based (HIDS) varieties exist.

Example: The IDS alerted on a port scan from a guest-network laptop against the finance servers.

Dorothy Denning's 1987 paper "An Intrusion-Detection Model" laid the groundwork. Open-source tools include Snort (1998), Suricata and Zeek. Detection relies on signatures of known attacks or on anomaly detection, and tuning out false positives is a constant task. An IPS adds the ability to block.

2. Information disclosure statement

Law & Legal · Intellectual Property Abbreviations

Submission to the USPTO listing patents, publications and other information known to the applicant that may be material to patentability. Inventors, applicants and their attorneys have a duty of candor that requires disclosing such references.

Example: Please send any new art cited in the European search report so we can file a supplemental IDS.

Governed by 37 C.F.R. §§ 1.56, 1.97 and 1.98, with timing determining whether fees or certifications are needed. Withholding material references with intent to deceive can make a patent unenforceable for inequitable conduct, a defense narrowed by Therasense v. Becton Dickinson (Fed. Cir. 2011).
