HZO stands for Herpes zoster ophthalmicus, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Shingles affecting the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve, causing a painful rash on the forehead, upper eyelid and sometimes nose, with possible inflammation of the cornea, iris and other eye structures. Prompt antiviral treatment and eye examination are needed.
Example: Vesicular rash left forehead with Hutchinson sign: HZO, valacyclovir and same-day ophthalmology.
Usage notes
A rash on the tip of the nose (Hutchinson's sign) predicts eye involvement, because the same nerve branch supplies it. Complications include keratitis, uveitis, glaucoma and long-term nerve pain. Vaccination with the recombinant zoster vaccine reduces risk. Pronounced as letters.
