HDHP stands for High-deductible health plan, a health insurance abbreviation.
Plan with a deductible at or above a minimum set by the IRS, which makes the enrollee eligible to contribute to a health savings account. For 2026 the minimum deductible is US$1,700 for self-only and US$3,400 for family coverage, with out-of-pocket maximums capped at US$8,500 and US$17,000.
Example: Switched to the HDHP to open an HSA; the first $1,700 of care each year is on me.
Usage notes
Preventive care can be covered before the deductible is met. Lower premiums suit healthy people with savings, but high upfront costs lead some enrollees to delay needed care. HDHPs paired with HSAs are a form of consumer-directed health plan. The IRS adjusts the limits annually for inflation.
