GT/s stands for Gigatransfers per second, a data unit abbreviation.

Billions of transfers per second per lane, the unit for PCI Express and other high-speed serial links. PCIe 4.0 runs at 16 GT/s per lane, PCIe 5.0 at 32 GT/s and PCIe 6.0 at 64 GT/s.

Example: A PCIe 5.0 x16 slot runs at 32 GT/s per lane, about 64 GB/s in each direction.

Usage notes

Transfers are not exactly bits because of encoding overhead: PCIe 3.0 to 5.0 use 128b/130b encoding, so 8 GT/s yields about 985 MB/s per lane, while PCIe 6.0 switches to PAM4 signaling and flit-based encoding. Intel's processor interconnects QPI and UPI are also rated in GT/s.
