GR8 stands for Great, a texting and chat abbreviation.

Letter-and-number spelling of "great" from the SMS era, using 8 for the sound "ate." Mostly seen in older texts, ads and nostalgic or ironic memes.

Example: Gr8 news about the job, let's celebrate Friday!

Usage notes

Part of a family of spellings exploiting the sound of "eight," along with L8R (later), M8 (mate) and W8 (wait). Looks dated and slightly ironic today; younger texters simply type the full word. Avoid in professional writing.
