GLF stands for Ground-level fall, an emergency medicine abbreviation.
Fall from standing height or lower, such as tripping or slipping while walking. In older adults it is a leading cause of hip fractures, head bleeds and trauma admissions.
Example: 82 y/o on apixaban, GLF striking head; CT head ordered.
Usage notes
Low-energy falls can still cause serious injuries in older adults, especially those on anticoagulants. Hospitals screen fall patients for the cause of the fall, such as syncope or infection. Falls from height are described separately with an estimated distance.
