CategoriesBusiness & Finance

FTE stands for Full-time equivalent, a human resources abbreviation also used in education.

Unit expressing workload in terms of full-time employees: 1.0 FTE is one person working a full schedule, often 40 hours a week or 2,080 hours a year, and two half-time employees together equal 1.0 FTE. Budgets, grants and headcount plans are usually expressed in FTEs.

Example: The grant funds 2.5 FTE, so we can hire two full-timers and one half-timer.

Usage notes

Definitions vary: some organizations use 37.5 or 35 hours as full-time. The Affordable Care Act uses a 30-hour standard and counts part-time hours divided by 120 per month toward an employer's FTE total. In UK universities and public bodies, a contract may simply state "0.6 FTE." FTE is not the same as headcount, which counts people regardless of hours.
