FSED stands for Freestanding emergency department, a hospital abbreviation.
Emergency facility located away from a hospital campus, offering 24-hour emergency care, imaging and labs, and transferring patients who need admission. Some are hospital-affiliated, others independent.
Example: FSED stabilized patient, transferred to main campus for cath lab.
Usage notes
Freestanding EDs are especially common in Texas. Hospital-affiliated ones are subject to EMTALA and bill as hospital EDs, which can surprise patients who expected urgent care prices. They differ from urgent care clinics in staffing and billing.
