FINA stands for Fédération Internationale de Natation (International Swimming Federation), a sports governing body abbreviation.

Former name of World Aquatics, the international governing body for swimming, diving, artistic swimming, water polo and open-water swimming. The initials remain common in older records and in references to the FINA points table.

Example: Her 200-meter backstroke was worth 880 FINA points under the scoring table.

Usage notes

Founded in London on July 19, 1908, during the Olympic Games, and headquartered in Lausanne. It renamed itself World Aquatics in December 2022. The points table, still widely called FINA points, compares swims across events by giving 1,000 points to a time equal to a set base time, usually the world record.
