FAD stands for Flavin adenine dinucleotide, a biology abbreviation.
Coenzyme derived from riboflavin (vitamin B2) that accepts and donates electrons in metabolism, cycling between FAD and its reduced form FADH2. It is tightly bound to enzymes such as succinate dehydrogenase, which links the citric acid cycle to the electron transport chain.
Example: Each turn of the citric acid cycle reduces one FAD to FADH2.
Usage notes
Flavins are yellow, and their name comes from Latin flavus (yellow); riboflavin turns urine bright yellow after high-dose supplements. FADH2 feeds electrons into the respiratory chain at a lower energy level than NADH, so it yields about 1.5 rather than 2.5 ATP.
