EVD stands for External ventricular drain, a neurology abbreviation.
Temporary catheter inserted through a burr hole into a lateral ventricle and connected to an external collection system, used to drain cerebrospinal fluid and measure intracranial pressure. Common indications include hydrocephalus from hemorrhage, severe traumatic brain injury and infections.
Example: EVD open at 10 cm H2O above the tragus, draining 8 mL/hr; ICP 12.
Usage notes
Also called a ventriculostomy. The drain is leveled to the external auditory meatus or tragus, which approximates the foramen of Monro, and the height determines how much fluid drains. Infection is a significant risk, so sampling is minimized and antimicrobial-impregnated catheters are used. The drain is weaned and clamped before removal to test whether a permanent shunt is needed.
