EMP stands for Electromagnetic pulse, a physics abbreviation.
Short, intense burst of electromagnetic energy that can induce damaging currents in electronics and power grids. EMPs are produced by nuclear explosions high in the atmosphere, by lightning and by specialized weapons, and a severe solar storm can have similar effects on long power lines.
Example: Utilities are hardening substations against both EMP and geomagnetic storms.
Usage notes
The 1962 Starfish Prime test, a nuclear explosion about 400 kilometers above the Pacific, knocked out streetlights and telephone links in Hawaii roughly 1,400 kilometers away. The 1859 Carrington solar storm set telegraph lines sparking. Faraday cages shield equipment from EMP.
