CategoriesTechnology & Computing

EKS stands for Elastic Kubernetes Service, a cloud computing abbreviation.

The managed Kubernetes offering on AWS, which runs the Kubernetes control plane for customers while their workloads run on EC2 nodes or Fargate.

Example: The platform team runs three EKS clusters, one each for development, staging and production.

Usage notes

Generally available since 2018. AWS manages the control plane's availability and upgrades, while customers manage worker nodes, add-ons and access policies unless they enable automated node management. It competes with Google's GKE and Microsoft's AKS.
