EFC stands for Expected Family Contribution, an academic abbreviation.
Former index calculated from FAFSA data that measured a family's ability to pay for college and determined need-based federal aid eligibility. It was replaced by the Student Aid Index in the 2024–25 award year.
Example: Older financial aid letters list the EFC next to the cost of attendance.
Usage notes
The EFC divided the family's contribution among siblings in college, a feature dropped in the new SAI formula. Many websites and counselors still use "EFC" loosely to mean expected contribution. Institutional formulas such as the CSS Profile calculate their own figures separately.
