CategoriesGeography & Places

DOM-TOM stands for Départements et territoires d'outre-mer (French overseas departments and territories), a region abbreviation.

Traditional collective term for France's overseas possessions, such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and French Polynesia. A 2003 constitutional reform replaced it officially with DROM-COM, but DOM-TOM remains common in speech.

Example: Mobile plans that include free roaming in the DOM-TOM are popular in France.

Usage notes

The overseas departments are fully part of France and the EU, while most overseas collectivities have more autonomy. About 2.8 million people live in France's overseas territories.
