DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, a standardized test abbreviation.
Set of one-minute reading measures, such as letter naming, phonemic segmentation, nonsense word reading and oral reading fluency, used to screen students in kindergarten through grade 8 for reading difficulties. The current edition, DIBELS 8, is published by the University of Oregon.
Example: Students scoring below benchmark on the DIBELS fall screener receive small-group phonics instruction.
Usage notes
Many states now require universal screening for dyslexia risk, and DIBELS is among the most common tools used. Because the measures are brief, teachers can repeat them often to monitor progress. Amplify's mCLASS platform delivers a digital version. Pronounced "DIB-ulls".
