DBP
Stands forDiastolic blood pressure
CategoriesMedical

DBP stands for Diastolic blood pressure, a cardiology abbreviation.

Lowest pressure in the arteries while the heart relaxes between beats, the bottom number of a blood pressure reading. Normal adult values are below 80 mmHg, and elevated diastolic pressure is common in younger adults with hypertension.

Example: Average home DBP 96 in a 38-year-old; screen for secondary causes of hypertension.

Usage notes

The coronary arteries fill mainly during diastole, so very low diastolic pressure can reduce heart blood flow, the basis of concern about a "J-curve" with aggressive treatment. Isolated diastolic hypertension is more common in younger people and carries less risk than elevated systolic pressure. Pulse pressure is the difference between the systolic and diastolic values.
