DBMS stands for Database management system, a data & database abbreviation.
Software that creates, stores, secures and retrieves data in databases, handling queries, transactions, concurrency, backups and user permissions. Oracle Database, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and MongoDB are all DBMSs.
Example: The course compares how each DBMS handles locking under heavy concurrent writes.
Usage notes
Early systems of the 1960s, such as IBM's IMS, built for the Apollo program, used hierarchical models; relational systems took over from the 1980s. The DBMS sits between applications and the files on disk, so applications never read raw storage directly. Textbooks carefully separate the database itself from the system that manages it.
