CVW stands for Carrier Air Wing, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
Group of Navy aviation squadrons assigned to an aircraft carrier, typically including F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, F-35C Lightning IIs, EA-18G Growlers, E-2D Hawkeyes, MH-60 helicopters and logistics aircraft.
Example: CVW-9 flew more than 1,000 combat sorties from the carrier during the deployment.
Usage notes
The designation combines CV, the hull symbol for a carrier, with W for wing; wings are numbered, as in CVW-17. The air wing commander, a Navy captain, is known as CAG, from the older title commander, air group.
