CSG stands for Carrier Strike Group, a military unit and organization abbreviation.
US Navy formation built around an aircraft carrier and its air wing, escorted by guided-missile cruisers or destroyers and often a submarine and supply ship. The strike group is commanded by a rear admiral.
Example: The Pentagon ordered a second CSG to the eastern Mediterranean.
Usage notes
The term replaced the older "carrier battle group" (CVBG) in the early 2000s. Strike groups are numbered, such as Carrier Strike Group 12, and usually deploy for about seven months. A carrier with its air wing carries roughly 5,000 to 6,000 sailors.
