CSTD stands for Closed-system drug-transfer device, a pharmacy abbreviation.

Device that mechanically prevents hazardous drug vapors, aerosols and droplets from escaping when a drug is transferred between vials, syringes and IV bags. Brand examples include PhaSeal, Equashield and ChemoClave.

Example: Spike the carboplatin bag with the CSTD adapter before it leaves pharmacy.

Usage notes

USP 800 requires CSTDs when administering antineoplastic hazardous drugs whenever the dosage form allows, and recommends them during compounding. NIOSH has developed test protocols for vapor containment. CSTDs supplement, but do not replace, protective gloves, gowns and ventilated cabinets.
