CRVO stands for Central retinal vein occlusion, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Blockage of the main vein draining the retina, causing painless blurred vision with widespread retinal hemorrhages, dilated veins and often macular swelling. Risk factors include age, high blood pressure, diabetes and glaucoma.
Example: CRVO OS with macular edema, VA 20/200; anti-VEGF monthly and monitor for iris neovascularization.
Usage notes
The fundus appearance is often described as "blood and thunder". Severe ischemic CRVO can cause neovascular glaucoma, historically called "90-day glaucoma". Anti-VEGF injections treat the macular edema. Patients are evaluated for blood pressure and other vascular risk factors.
