1. Dilated fundus examination

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Eye exam performed after dilating the pupils with drops so the clinician can see the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels at the back of the eye. It is recommended yearly for people with diabetes and as part of comprehensive eye exams.

Example: DFE OU: no diabetic retinopathy; return in 12 months.

Dilation typically uses tropicamide and phenylephrine and blurs near vision and increases light sensitivity for several hours, so patients may need a driver. Retinal photography can supplement but not fully replace a dilated exam. Pronounced as letters.

2. Department for Education (DfE)

Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations

Oversees schools, children's services, further education, apprenticeships and higher education policy in England. Education is devolved, so Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate systems.

Example: The DfE announced new guidance on mobile phones in schools.

The department has had several names since 1992, including the Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Children, Schools and Families, before adopting its current name in 2010. Its agencies include the Standards and Testing Agency, while school inspections are carried out by the independent Ofsted.
