CategoriesScience & Engineering

CNV stands for Copy-number variation, a genetics abbreviation.

Difference between individuals in the number of copies of a DNA segment, typically 1,000 base pairs or longer, caused by deletions or duplications. CNVs can affect whole genes and are a major cause of developmental disorders, as well as normal variation between people.

Example: Chromosomal microarray detected a pathogenic CNV, a deletion at 22q11.2.

Usage notes

Populations with traditionally high-starch diets tend to carry more copies of the salivary amylase gene AMY1, a well-known example of adaptive copy-number variation. CNVs are detected with microarrays or by read depth in sequencing data. Tumors also acquire CNVs, such as amplification of the HER2 gene in some breast cancers.
