CEU stands for Continuing education unit, a professional certification abbreviation.
Standard measure of participation in noncredit professional education, where one CEU equals ten contact hours of instruction. Licensing boards and certifying bodies require CEUs to renew licenses for teachers, nurses, counselors, engineers and many other professions.
Example: Social workers in the state must earn 3.0 CEUs, or 30 hours, every two years.
Usage notes
The CEU was developed by a national task force in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) maintains the standard. Some boards use "CEU" loosely to mean one contact hour, so professionals should check how their board counts them.
