Hospital shorthand for cardiology, the internal medicine subspecialty treating diseases of the heart and blood vessels such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and valve disease. Adult training is a three-year fellowship after internal medicine, with further fellowships in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and advanced heart failure.

Usage notes

"Cards" is spoken and charting slang rather than a formal title; formal notes say cardiology. The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association jointly issue most US cardiovascular guidelines. Cardiologists are distinct from cardiothoracic surgeons, who perform open-heart operations.
