A&I stands for Allergy and immunology, a medical specialty abbreviation.
Subspecialty treating allergic diseases and immune system disorders, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, food and drug allergy, anaphylaxis, eczema, hives and primary immunodeficiencies. Specialists complete a two-year fellowship after internal medicine or pediatrics residency.
Example: A&I clinic performed a penicillin skin test and oral challenge; allergy label removed.
Usage notes
The American Board of Allergy and Immunology is a conjoint board of internal medicine and pediatrics. Allergists perform skin and blood allergy testing, oral food challenges and allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots and tablets). Removing inaccurate penicillin allergy labels is a growing focus, since most people labeled allergic can tolerate penicillin.
