CAC 40 stands for Cotation Assistée en Continu 40 (continuous assisted quotation 40), a stock market & investing abbreviation.
Benchmark index of 40 of the largest companies listed on Euronext Paris, including LVMH, TotalEnergies and L'Oréal, weighted by free-float market capitalization. It is the main gauge of the French stock market.
Example: The CAC 40 underperformed other European indices as luxury-goods stocks slumped.
Usage notes
The name refers to the Paris Bourse's automated trading system. The index started at a base value of 1,000 at the end of 1987. Luxury and consumer brands carry an unusually large weight compared with other European benchmarks, so it is sensitive to Chinese consumer demand.
