CategoriesBusiness & Finance

BVPS stands for Book value per share, a stock market & investing abbreviation.

Common shareholders' equity divided by the number of shares outstanding, showing the accounting value of each share. It is the denominator of the price-to-book ratio.

Example: The bank's BVPS rose to $48.60, so at $41 the stock trades below book.

Usage notes

Tangible BVPS excludes goodwill and other intangibles and is widely used for banks. Buybacks executed above book value reduce BVPS, while those below book increase it. Warren Buffett stopped emphasizing Berkshire Hathaway's book value per share in his 2018 letter, arguing it had become less relevant.
