BO3 stands for Best of three, a gaming slang abbreviation.

Match format in which the first player or team to win two games takes the series. Standard in esports, fighting-game tournaments and many sports.

Example: Semis are BO3, but the grand final is a BO5.

Usage notes

Longer formats such as BO5 (best of five) and BO7 reduce the role of luck and are used for finals. Upsets are more common in BO1 (single game) formats. In Call of Duty fandom, BO3 can also mean Black Ops III, which context separates.
