BLDC stands for Brushless DC motor, an electronics & electrical abbreviation.
Electric motor in which permanent magnets on the rotor are driven by electronically switched currents in stationary windings, eliminating the brushes and commutator of traditional DC motors. BLDC motors are efficient, quiet and long-lasting, powering drones, computer fans, power tools, e-bikes and appliances.
Example: The drone's four BLDC motors are each driven by a separate electronic speed controller.
Usage notes
Because commutation is electronic, a controller must know or estimate rotor position, using Hall-effect sensors or sensorless back-EMF detection. Cordless tools advertised as "brushless" run longer per charge and need less maintenance. Many EV traction motors are closely related permanent-magnet synchronous motors.
