CategoriesUnits & Measurements

BEDMAS stands for Brackets, Exponents, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction, a math abbreviation.

The order-of-operations mnemonic used mainly in Canada and New Zealand, combining the British "brackets" with the American "exponents".

Example: Apply BEDMAS: (3 + 5)² ÷ 4 = 64 ÷ 4 = 16.

Usage notes

The rules match PEMDAS and BODMAS: brackets, then exponents, then multiplication and division left to right, then addition and subtraction left to right. Teachers stress that putting D before M is only for pronounceability. Calculators and programming languages follow the same precedence, though they sometimes treat implied multiplication differently.
