ATGM stands for Anti-tank guided missile, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Guided missile designed to destroy tanks and armored vehicles, fired by infantry, vehicles or helicopters. Examples include the US Javelin and TOW and Russia's Kornet.
Example: Ukrainian infantry used ATGMs to destroy armored columns near Kyiv in 2022.
Usage notes
Pronounced as letters. Javelin is "fire-and-forget," allowing the gunner to take cover after launch, and attacks the thinner top armor of tanks. ATGMs reshaped armored warfare starting with the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, when Egyptian infantry inflicted heavy tank losses with Soviet Sagger missiles.
